Friday Heirloom 76: La Dune Du Pilat, France

Check out the Highlights of November here

Why walk if you can fly?

Once upon a time, in a faraway land kissed by the Atlantic Ocean, there was a girl in a myriad of colors. The land’s name is, of course, the bay of Arcachon and the set of colors was the one surrounding an enchanting natural monument, the Dune du Pilat.

The Dune du Pilat is the highest sand dune in Europe. Not only the height, but also the width of the Dune, the pine forests around it and the views of those who’d rather fly than walk make it absolutely stunning.

What fascinates me the most about the Dune is the sense of freedom it gives me once I hike to the top – which is an enlightening experience itself – with the greens blending into the blues of sky and water.

Someone once told me that the shapes and colours of the Dune du Pilat change according to the specific times of day and season, too. One thing is obvious: nature has expressed itself fully, over a thousands of years, in what is one of the most beautiful areas in the world: the bay of Arcachon!

With its long, white-sanded beaches extending in the south-west of Bordeaux, Arcachon is a must if you’re ever in the area. And Bordeaux, for those of you who are not familiar with it, is the world’s most famous wine region as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Going back to the Dune du Pilat… Well, it is massive in every sense of the word! It attracts almost two million tourists every year, which makes it the most visited tourist attraction of south-western France.

No wonder the Dune is surrounded by campsites and hotels, one of which is the artsy La Guitoune, where I stayed during my trip.

If you care, here are some photos I took of my room, the facilities and the inspired-to-the-50’s deco of Hotel La Guitoune. I loved my stay!

Both the view from the hotel and the sights of the dune made my journey special. I sat on the top of the world for a few hours, in contemplation, looking for the smallest details and searching for truth and happiness.

Freedom is a virus. In all my travels I always look for museums and/or heritage sites to explore. I also crave adventure while searching for things that solve problems.

I like to do it alone and with others.

(Let life be a bohemian rhapsody and feel the love of a million people…)
