Friday Heirloom 77: Château de la Tour de By, France

Check out the Highlights of November here

Your life is a Bohemian Rhapsody…

The Chateau de la Tour de By is located in the North of Bordeaux, precisely in the Médoc region, and is a family estate of 94 hectares cultivating the following grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The property employs about 30 people.

Together with the Château, where wine is made, one can walk by the owners’ private home (a few details pictured below) as well as a tower, the so called Tour de By.

Over three days spent in the area (thanks to a friend of mine who works for the Château), I was able to not only visit the property – of which my other friend and I were lucky enough to get a free private tour – but also some of the nearby properties, like the Château Lousteauneuf.

During the guided tour of the Château de la Tour de By, we learned about the importance of family traditions and know-how when making wine. The guide, a beautiful French demoiselle whose name I cannot remember, went also through all the steps of the process, from harvesting through draining/pressing, fermentation and obviously bottle-filling.

After the tour of the first room, we entered the “storage” areas where we tasted last year’s production: an intense, black-fruited red. Yum!

We ended our visit with a few more tastings, before heading to the beautiful Tour de By, which was surrounded by orange vineyards and blue skies.

Not a bad afternoon at all for being in mid-November!

The Tower is the one on the right. I’m really looking forward to re-visiting soon. There’s so much I want to see and do around the Bordeaux area…

Let me know your thoughts. Have you ever been to the Médoc region of France?
