But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only

That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.

Nothing farther then he uttered—not a feather then he fluttered—

Till I scarcely more than muttered “Other friends have flown before—

On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before.”

            Then the bird said “Nevermore.”

(The Raven, Edgar Allan Poe)

Hey guys!

I’ve never written a book review on Musalley but here I am, with this new book on the creepiest crime scenes at the Musée d’Orsay. I just love this one!

The title of the book is “The Orsay Murder Club” (published in English and in French a few months ago – October 2018) and it was written by Christos Markogiannakis.

Living between Greece and France, the author studied law and criminology and worked for several years as a criminal lawyer. He also published “The Louvre Murder Club” in 2017.

What makes this book macabre is not only, obviously, the topic and the selection of the works, but also the setting. Hey everyone! Here’s the Orsay: a former train station turned into what today is a glamorous museum.

And murder is everywhere at the Orsay! Did you know it?

This book is an ode to the macabre at the museum. By investigating and interpreting about 30 works of art through a “criminartistic’ eye, the author tracks some of the best crime scenes in the art world.

The book is divided in sections, which are basically specific categories of murder. I found the following three pretty amusing:

Beheaded, Burned Or Skinned Alive (example of work)

Henri Regnault, Execution Without Process. 1870

I Love To Hate You (example of work)

Carlos Schwabe, Cask of Hate. After 1899

On Us And On Our Children (example of work)

The Road to Calvary, Maurice Denis. 1889

By also outlining the factual and historical issues, the victims and the murderers, Mr.  Markogiannakis’ writing is rich and delightful.

Will we ever find out the truth about the pictured facts? Who, how and why? As many things in life, the answer is rather simple: it depends.

I hope you’ll check out the book! You can easily find it on Amazon.
